Application & Selection
The 2015-17 Detroit Revitalization Fellows – our third cohort – will consist of roughly twenty accomplished, ambitious and hard-working mid-career professionals. Almost all of them will have completed a graduate degree and have between five and fifteen years of professional experience when they join us as Revitalization Fellows in August of 2015 to work on some of the city’s most pressing needs and opportunities for two years. Some of them will come from the ranks of Detroiters already here making things happen. Some will be entirely new Detroiters. Still others will find this the perfect opportunity to come home and contribute to the place they’ve always loved. All Revitalization Fellows will be part of a group committed to the idea that Detroit is not a clean slate but full of communities that are vibrant and vital to our future. These leaders could be successful anywhere, but they will choose to make impact in and around Detroit.
There are three ways for a mid-career professional to become a Detroit Revitalization Fellow. The application and selection process is competitive for both Employers and Fellows, and is detailed on this Application Timeline.
- A Standard Applicant, in which the Fellow is matched with an Employer looking to add new talent and capacity to their organization. Fellow applicants may be existing Detroiters, new to Detroit, or returning to the city and region. Most Fellows will fit this category.
- An Employer Nomination, in which an Employer notifies the Detroit Revitalization Fellows program staff that someone already on their staff is applying to be a Fellow. With the Employer notification, this applicant is automatically a Semi-Finalist. If the applicant makes it to the Finalist stage, the Employer and applicant must both interview for other opportunities. There will only be 1-3 of these awarded.
- A Fellow-in-Place, in which the applicant is already in a role that’s fitting for a Detroit Revitalization Fellow. A team of potential Employer & potential Fellow notifies the Detroit Revitalization Fellows program on Dec 1, 2014 of their interest in applying. The team applies and is evaluated jointly on the same timeline as other Fellows (Semi-Finalist, Finalist). The team is interviewed by program staff on April 30-May 2, then notified of selection by May 15, 2015. There will only be 1-3 of these awarded.
